The Superman Curse: What is it?

The Superman curse was a curse believed to be laid upon every man that has portrayed the man of steel. It was believed that those that worked on filmming Superman you would be cursed.

  • George Reeves committed suicide after the misfortune playing the role became too much for him.
  • Bud Collyer voiced the first Superman cartoon from 1941-1943. He later returned in 1966 to voice The New Adventures of Superman. Three years later he was dead of a circulatory ailment.
  • Lee Quigley who played Superman as a baby in the 1978 film died in 1991 at age 14 to solvent abuse.
  • Kirk Alyn played Superman in the low budget 1940’s series. He was unable to find work outside of the role. In 1978 he appeared as Lois Lane’s father in the 1978 Superman film. Kirk Alyn suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and died in 1999.
  • Christoper Reeve played Superman in the Superman movie series between 1978 and 1987. It was difficult for him to escape the shadow of Superman and he found himself in mostly Superman related films and television. He was paralyzed from the neck down after a fall from a horse in 1995 and died of heart failure in 2004.
  • Others that have been visited by the curse include Superman Returns, Kate Bosworth who played Lois Lane in the film. The curse was blamed for her break-up with Orlando Bloom.
  • Margot Kidder, who played Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeves from 1978-1987 and suffered from intense bipolar disorder. Richard Pryor who starred as villian Gus Gorman in the 1983 Superman III film was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and later died of cardiac arrest in 2005.
  • Dana Reeve, wife of Christopher Reeve died of lung cancer in 2006 despite being a nonsmoker.
  • The curse was also visited upon two people involved in the creation of the DVD Superman Returns. One fell down a flight of stairs while another was mugged and beaten up and a third smashed into a glass window.
  •  There have however been a few exceptions to the Superman curse. Brandon Routh from Superman Returns and Dean Cain from “Lois and Clark” the New Adventures of Superman” have yet to be visited by such a curse.
